ASL Week Program Description:

What is American Sign Language (ASL)? Some would say that it's’ the language of the Deaf. Some would say that it’s the language of a community, which consists of diverse Deaf and hearing people. Numerous people in North America enjoy communicating in American Sign Language, just like many others who also enjoy communicating in English and other spoken languages.

ASL week offers adults an opportunity to improve their ASL skills. The week includes three different levels of instruction: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. (Beginner level students must complete a basic ASL course prior to coming into the program.) Topics will include ASL vocabulary, receptive and expressive skills, fingerspelling, the use of classifiers, referencing and verbs, as well as insights on linguistics and Deaf culture.

Prepare to only speak in ASL this week, as this is an immersion week from Sunday to Friday, using ASL to communicate in class sessions and at meals. There are five hours of instruction each day rounded out with recreational activities that include swimming, hiking, sign games, skits, and more.
